IRC Chat Instructions

Compiled by LisaBham

Using an IRC client to access the chatroom

  1. Download and install the proper IRC client, if you haven't already done so: mIRC for PCs (www.mirc.com) and Ircle for MacOS (www.ircle.com). These are both shareware programs. (They are free to download; the authors ask that you register and pay a small fee if you like the program.)

  2. Fill in the personal information requested on the opening window. (Name, E-mail, Nickname, Alternative) This information does not have to be correct.

Note: The Nickname you enter is the name assigned to you in the chatroom. If someone is already using this name, the Alternative will be assigned to you. (You can also register your nickname, if you would like, to prevent someone else from using it.)

  3. Click the Add or Edit buttons to enter/edit server information.

    Description:Dark Angel
    IRC Server:lizard.fleetchat.org
    Port:6667
    Group:#darkangel

  4. Click the OK button to save this information and return to the first window.

  5. Click the Connect to IRC Server button to connect to the lizard Fleetchat server. After you connect, you will see a list of channels:

  6. Choose the #darkangel channel. If it is not on the list, you will need to add it. Alternatively, you can type /join #darkangel on the command line (no space between the "/" and the beginning of the line!)

Occasionally, one of the servers in the fleetchat network is down and you will have to try another one. The available fleetchat servers include:

freedom.fleetchat.orgDirect IP Address: 12.30.169.76
honor.fleetchat.orgDirect IP Address: 64.123.230.81
patriot.fleetchat.orgDirect IP Address: 63.162.10.42

You can set up new server profiles for all of these servers, if you wish, just as you did for lizard. (Be sure to give them different descriptions.) For more information on the Fleetchat servers, visit their website at www.fleetchat.org.

Registering a nickname

If you are in #darkangel and would like to register your nickname so no one else can use it, type /msg NickServ REGISTER passwordofchoice. Remember, no space between the "/" and the beginning of the line, and choose a password that you can remember since you will have to type it in to use your nick.

Using basic IRC commands

There are many commands available in the IRC environment. The best place to find them (other than asking a room operator) is in the help file that is included with mIRC and Ircle. Some of the more "basic" commands include:

/join #chatroom_nameopens a window in a new chatroom
/nick new_nicknamechanges your nickname in the chat room
/me actionsends a comment about you to the room
/msg nickname messagesends a private message to the specified nickname
/quitdisconnects you from IRC
/quit messageleaves a message as you disconnect from IRC
/partleaves the room that you type it in
